1A D1
Butte County 59, Valley 50
HAZELTON- The Vikings (1-2) were never out of the game, but never quite made the Pirates (3-1) sweat. Saturday at the Small School Showcase at Mountain View High School in Meridian. The reasons why were the same ones that have plagued Valley in their three games so far this season.
“Missed opportunities and taking care of the basketball,” head coach Brian Hardy told the Times-News. “That’s been a problem in all three games so far. We got away with it one time, but not enough good possessions.”
Butte County, who beat Oakley to win the 1A DI football state championship last month, used its similar strong athletes, trapped Valley ballhandlers and got hands on the ball in passing lanes. That aggressive defense, as well as the Vikings 7-for-22 performance from the free throw line allowed the Pirates to keep Valley at bay all game.
Butte County's largest lead was 28-15 with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter. The Vikings kept creeping closer, though some of their own mistakes kept them from ever really going on a run. A three-pointer from Tex Godfrey eventually cut the lead to 48-43 with just under five minutes remaining. It was the closest Valley got all night.
Junior Nathan Christensen had a game-high 16 points and led the Vikings, while senior Daniel Juarez added 13 points. Butte County senior Brody Westergard had 14 points to lead the Pirates, while fellow senior Braxton Gamett also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Valley graduated just one senior from last year’s team that finished one win away from a 1A DI state tournament berth, but it was a big one in co-Snake River Conference Player of the Year Kyle Christensen. The Vikings are still a young team this year with just two seniors in Godfrey and Juarez, and many players are still adjusting to new roles. Hardy said he has seen what he needs to in moments, they just need to more consistent. Experience should only help in that regard.
“We only had one senior but he did a lot for us,” Hardy said. “So they had that safety blanket and now it’s not there and they need to learn to play without it.”
Valley returns to the court on Saturday at Oakley (0-1) at 7:30 p.m.
Murtaugh 45, Rimrock 40
Murtaugh (1-1) will visit Hagerman at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Glenns Ferry @ Shoshone (n/a)
1A DII
Camas County 70, Rockland 58
Camas County's Troy Smith led his squad with 19 points as his twin, Tristen Smith, scored 18 in a rematch of the 2022 1A Division II state final.
Tyson Tupper contributed 10 points and Trevor Tews added nine. The Mushers (3-0) will battle Liberty Charter at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Small School Showcase at Mountain View High School in Meridian.
