It’s hard to find time to research candidates. But some recent quotes from former President Donald Trump have made me concerned enough that I want to do something to support a different Republican before the primaries end, and I think Nikki Haley is the best chance at this point in preserving our democracy and limiting some of the divisiveness we have now.
I think these quotes show a lack of recognition that people are people. Polices and views can be attacked, but people should be respected. Trump said immigration is “poisoning the blood of our country,” and “[w]e pledge to you that we will root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country.”
Nikki Haley, on the other hand, wants to welcome “properly vetted legal immigrants, regardless of their race or religion.” We all know and love people of various racial, religious, and political backgrounds, even just here in the Magic Valley. Haley also believes in the importance of life because of experiences with her children, and because her husband was adopted.

Anyway, I’m not a political expert, but I think that those of us who care about having a president with morals and who will respect democratic processes and institutions that protect us from falling into the turmoil that so many countries have, we need to make small sacrifices to go out and vote and speak up in favor of basic principles like respect, kindness, and commitment to uphold our Constitution that has blessed our country with a lot of, though not perfect, domestic peace for so many years.
