Washington state has sued to block the proposed merger of Kroger and Albertsons, two of the nation's largest grocery chains. Attorney General Bob Ferguson filed the lawsuit Monday in King County Superior Court. The Seattle Times reported that Ferguson in his suit argued that the $25-billion deal would harm consumers and raise prices. According to the suit, Kroger and Albertsons have more than 300 locations in the state and account for more than half of its grocery sales. Kroger, which owns QFC and Fred Meyer, is seeking to acquire Albertsons, which owns Safeway. In a statement, Kroger said it remained in dialogue with state attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission regarding the proposed merger.

The Supreme Court has agreed to review lower-court rulings that make it harder for cities in the western United States to prevent people from sleeping on the streets when there aren’t enough beds in homeless shelters. The justices said Friday they will hear an appeal from the city of Grants Pass, in southwest Oregon. The appeal has the backing of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a Democrat, as well as other Democratic and Republican elected officials who have struggled to deal with homelessness brought on by rising housing costs and income inequality. The court’s action comes a day after another appellate ruling that blocked anti-camping ordinances in San Francisco.

Texas officials have recently begun blocking Border Patrol agents from accessing an area near the Rio Grande known as Shelby Park. Subfreezing temperatures blasting much of the U.S. have put millions of Americans at risk of potentially dangerous cold as winter storms have left four dead and continue to dump snow from coast to coast. The National Weather Service said Sunday that wind chills could plummet as low as minus 70 degrees in Montana and the Dakotas. An estimated 95 million Americans faced potential windy, frigid conditions with temperatures below zero even into northern Texas. Buffalo, New York, could see up to 2 feet of snow, weather so severe it forced an NFL playoff game between the Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers to be postponed from Sunday to Monday. Elsewhere, parts of the South braced for a round of snow.

Patrick Mahomes threw for 262 yards and a touchdown, leading the Chiefs to a 26-7 rout of the Dolphins in the fourth-coldest game in NFL history. It was so cold that Mahomes' helmet was shattered on a helmet-to-helmet hit. Rashee Rice and Isiah Pacheco had TDs for the Chiefs, and Harrison Butker was perfect on four field-goal attempts. The Dolphins' Tyreek Hill had a 53-yard TD catch in his return to Kansas City, but that was just about all the offense for one of the NFL's highest-scoring teams. Miami still has not won a playoff game since Dec. 30, 2000.

Some hardy winter sport enthusiasts are heading to ski resorts and backcountry slopes in the Western U.S. despite frigid temperatures and a massive winter storm that dumped snow across much of the region. But the storm also brought high avalanche risk in many areas. The first reported U.S. avalanche death of the season happened Wednesday in California. And on Thursday, two men were rescued and a third died after they were caught in an avalanche in Idaho. To stay safe, people who enjoy activities in the snowy backcountry should check the avalanche forecast before heading out and make sure they have the right gear.

Authorities have located and retrieved the body of a male skier who was caught in an avalanche in the Idaho backcountry. Two other men from the skiing party were rescued after authorities received an alert about an avalanche near Stevens Peak close to the Montana border shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday. The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office says the man's body was extracted Friday afternoon. The sheriff’s office says authorities established communications and found the two men, but believed the third skier had perished. Authorities called off the search for the night and resumed looking for the deceased man on Friday. The Idaho search came a day after an avalanche hit a ski resort near Lake Tahoe in California, trapping several people and killing one.

A dangerous winter storm swept the northern U.S. on Friday, with blinding snow in some places, freezing rain in others, and bitter cold temperatures and whipping winds across several states. Authorities in Cook County, Illinois say a man died from cold exposure on Thursday in a Chicago suburb. The massive storm continues a week of strong winter weather for much of the U.S. that has led to deadly avalanches and treacherous ice-covered roads. A man was believed dead after an avalanche in the Idaho backcountry. A Wisconsin man died while snow-blowing his driveway. Political leaders in Illinois implored Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to stop sending migrants to Chicago, which is on the verge of dangerous weather. However, Abbott refused.

Alabama wasted little time in finding Nick Saban’s successor, hiring Kalen DeBoer away from national runner-up Washington. The powerhouse program tapped DeBoer on Friday to replace Saban, just two days after the 72-year-old coach announced his retirement. DeBoer says in a statement that he “would not have left Washington for just any school.” But he says the chance to coach Alabama “is the opportunity of a lifetime.” Saban won six national titles with the Crimson Tide and seven overall. DeBoer went 25-3 in two seasons at Washington and has a career record of 104-12 at all levels of college football.

Republican presidential candidates these days are barely discussing abortion in Iowa just days away from the state's caucuses. That's a remarkable change in a state whose Republicans have long supported religious conservative priorities. The AP spoke to more than 20 voters about why. Several said they felt the issue has less urgency after the Supreme Court overturned a federally guaranteed right to abortion. But other Republicans say they're worried Democrats have won campaigns by advocating for abortion rights since the court's decision. They're lining up with former President Donald Trump, the GOP front-runner, who has refused to support a national abortion ban because he says it's bad politics.

Barred from giving a formal closing argument, Donald Trump wrested an opportunity to speak in court at the conclusion of his New York civil fraud trial. He unleashed a barrage of attacks in a six-minute diatribe Thursday before being cut off by the judge. Trump is accused of inflating his company's financial statements in order to get better deals on loans and insurance. He called the proceedings “a fraud on me." The day began with authorities responding to a bomb threat at the judge’s house. They found nothing amiss. The judge indicated he'll rule by the end of the month.
