Nick Saban is retiring with his Alabama football program still appearing formidable enough to regularly contend for Southeastern Conference and national championships. The 72-year-old Saban won six national titles and nine SEC crowns in 17 seasons with the Crimson Tide. He told ESPN that he has "always said that I didn't want to ride the program down." Saban said he settled on retirement after returning from a trip last weekend to his Florida home. One reported potential candidate to replace him, Oregon coach Dan Lanning, says he is staying put.

Purdue is back at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll after its run to the Maui Invitational title. The Boilermakers beat three teams ranked among the top 11. They replace preseason No. 1 Kansas, which dropped to fifth after losing to Marquette in Maui. Arizona climbed to second, Marquette is third and Uconn is fourth.

No. 3 Washington, No. 4 Florida State and No. 5 Oregon all moved up a spot in The Associated Press college football poll to give the Pac-12 two top-five teams for the first time since the final ranking of the 2016 season. Georgia remained No. 1 and received 52 of 62 first-place votes. Michigan returned to No. 2 following a week at No. 3 and received 10 first-place votes after beating Ohio State 30-24. The Buckeyes slipped from second to No. 6 and cleared the way for Washington to reach its best ranking since finishing the 2000 season at No. 3.

It's hard to top the Iron Bowl in the SEC's final week of the regular season, no matter how many other traditional rivalries are taking place. No. 8 Alabama plays at Auburn seeking its fourth straight in the series while the Tigers are hoping to bounce back from a demoralizing 31-10 loss to New Mexico State last week. There are four ACC-SEC matchups, headed by No. 1 Georgia at Georgia Tech, No. 5 Florida State at Florida and No. 9 Louisville at Kentucky.

The new tech-infused TGL golf league of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy is postponing its debut by one year. TGL says damage to dome portion of the arena at Palm Beach State College can't be repaired in time for the planned Jan. 9 debut. Instead of rushing to have a partial schedule next year, owners and other key partners think it's best to wait until 2025 to get it right. Woods and McIlroy are co-founders in TMRW Sports. That's the entertainment group that created TGL for 24 top players in an indoor arena. McIlroy says the delay will help them return stronger.

Top-ranked Georgia has already clinched the SEC East but seeks another milestone when it visits No. 21 Tennessee. The Bulldogs can not only achieve an unprecedented third consecutive 8-0 league finish since the SEC expanded to an eight-game schedule in 1992, but also extend their school-record winning streak to 27 consecutive games. The Volunteers are coming off a 36-7 shellacking at Missouri and seek their first win over UGa since 2016.

Hailey Van Lith says she admired LSU's program from afar long before the former Louisville star decided to close her college career there. Van Lith's decision to switch schools was one of the biggest offseason stories in women's college basketball and helped LSU follow up its national title by winning the transfer portal sweepstakes. LSU added both Van Lith and former DePaul guard Aneesah Morrow. The additions of Van Lith and Morrow give LSU two of the most notable transfers as the top-ranked Tigers open their title defense.
