MURTAUGH — The Mushers (5-0 overall) were in control the whole way in this one, as their frenetic pace wore down the Red Devils (1-3).
“We’re still kind of getting ourselves gathered up after a really late football run," Camas County head coach Jamon Frostenson told the Times-News. “We got some kids that are still banged and bruised but we’re starting to play a little better basketball and get down the floor some.”
Camas County’s Troy Smith had a game-high 20 points, and was one of four Mushers to score in double figures. Tristen Smith and Trevor Tews added 15 points and Emmett Palan scored 14.
All four are seniors and were named to the 1A Division II All-State football team on Wednesday after helping lead the program to its first state championship appearance since 1981.
Murtaugh struggled with foul trouble throughout the game, and senior Oscar Aburto led the Red Devils with 14 points while junior Brody Funk also finished in double figures with 12.
Aburto was also named to the 1A D1 All-State football team.
Murtaugh made some tough shots to stay within striking distance in the first half, and Camas County led 37-28 at halftime.
The Mushers made their move in the third quarter, ending the frame on a 13-2 run to take a 64-41 lead.
The combination of a fast pace, press defense and a variety of kids who attacked the basket proved too much for Murtaugh.
Just like in football, the Mushers chemistry comes from having played together for a long time. Most of the playing time goes to Camas County’s nine seniors, who have been playing together since kindergarten.
“There’s not one player on this team that’s selfish,” Palan told the Times-News. “We all move the ball around the court well, and pass and rebound. Everything was working.”
Both teams are hitting the road for games on Friday, with the Mushers playing at Horseshoe Bend at 5:30 p.m. and the Red Devils at Dietrich at 7:30 p.m.
